Question

my finance's son was playing with my dog on October 7th. The dog nipped him on the mouth. There were no marks then or on Tuesday the 9th when we saw him next. His mom called today because she said he has an infection on this mouth and that he has blood in his urine. Is this possible? Also, would an infection show up when there were no marks and several days after the bite took place?

Answer

I do not see how blood in his urine could have anything to do with his mouth. Blood in urine is usually indicative of a urinary infection (most likely bladder or urethra). You didn't indicate what symptoms were present in his mouth. You may have a mother on your hands that is angry about your relationship with your fiancee and is using him to get revenge. However, it is important to put the child's health first. With this in mind, I would recommend taking the boy to a doctor for a check up to determine if he does in fact have an infection in his mouth. If he does, the doctor can give him medicine to take care of him. If not, you will be able to tell his mother he was checked and given a clean bill of health. The doctor's office can also do a urine test to determine if he has blood in his urine. Both symptoms can be checked with one visit.

Reply to Pam's Post: the child is with his mom so I have not seen his mouth. I believe she said that the infection is around the area bit outside of his mouth. That was the other part of the question you were not specific on---is it possible to have infection start that many days after the incident (and when there were no marks left)

Accepted Answer

It is unlikely he has an infection if the dog did not penetrate his skin. However, if the bite penetrated his skin, it could take a several days for the bacteria to reproduce to a quantity needed to produce a visible infection.
