Question

I have a 1998 towne & country van that had the v-belt break and replaced. After i replaced belt, i had a terrible squealling sound coming from that area. Somebody said it may be your berrings in your tension pully, so i replaced the tension pully and I'm still getting bad sound. Can you help me figure out how to check which one of pully's is bad because i don't think it's the belt. I only replaced the wheel tension pully and not the whole part.

Answer

Hi,

Here is the easiest way to isolate noise. Take a 3-4' length of 3/8" diameter tubing or hose, and while someone is revving engine to get it to squeal, have one end of hose to your ear and take other end of hose and place over or on each part that has a pulley-A/C compressor, power steering pump, idler pulley, tensioner, alternator.(BE CAREFUL - you will be working around moving parts-watch where your hand is and make sure you dont have any long necklaces on) I have had my knuckles scraped doing this. Whichever one has bad bearing will be amplified with hose at it for you to hear. If you happen to have a real stethoscope, even better, but the above method works great.

Accepted Answer

Hi,

If sound still comes from the tensioner pulley, remove the pulley return it to exchange on tensioner complete assembly. It is possible that there is excessive clearance between pulley bearing and the bolt.
