Question

I just got a 02 mercedes s500. Haven't driven car yet (awaiting title) but when I let the car idle for about 15 minutes the rear of the car feels like it drops but when I get out the car to look I can't notice a difference. I also yesterday that when I was out the car looking the front also seem to more. Should I wait to really drive the car or do I have a suspension problem?

Thanks,

  • These have a problem with the suspension control module. There is a bullitin put out by Mercedes for this condition. I've posted it below. I would consider having it repaired, it may be intermitant when you start driving it, and might appear at those times in traffic waiting for long periods.

Revision History

Revision Date Purpose a 2/2/07 Applicable Models / Repair Procedure and Warranty Information Updated - 12/05/01 Initial issue

SUBJECT:
Model 215.373/374/375/376/378, VIN Range A018130 to VIN A023610

Model 220.170/173/174/175/176/178, VIN Range A227562 to A265219, Equipped with ABC Suspension (code 487a)

Model 230.474/475/476, VIN Range F000300 to F004810

Level Adjustment Without Obvious Cause

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of erratic level adjustment without obvious cause after the vehicle has been idling for a prolonged period of time (greater than 10 minutes ), replace the Active Body Control (ABC) control module with a revised part.

The vehicle may raise or lower erratically at one wheel or at one axle. In isolated cases, a warning message appears in the display of the instrument cluster and one or multiple of the following fault codes (listed below) may be stored in the ABC control module.

C1525 001 - Critical vehicle level front left
C1525 002 - Critical vehicle level front right
C1525 004 - Critical vehicle level rear left
C1525 008 - Critical vehicle level rear right
C1526 001 - Fault in hydraulic circuit at front left suspension strut
C1526 002 - Fault in hydraulic circuit at front right suspension strut
C1526 004 - Fault in hydraulic circuit at rear left suspension strut
C1526 008 - Fault in hydraulic circuit at rear right suspension strut
C1531 004 - Left rear suspension strut moves although locking valve is closed
C1531 001 - Left front suspension strut moves although locking valve is closed
C1531 008 - Right rear suspension strut moves although locking valve is closed
C1531 002 - Right front suspension strut moves although locking valve is closed

Level adjustment without obvious cause may be the result of a jammed control valve in the front or rear axle valve block, which in newer vehicles can occur after the vehicle has been idling for a prolonged period of time (>10 minutes ). In isolated cases, this condition can also occur on older vehicles as a result of dirt in the valve block.

NOTE: The revised ABC control module software contains a control algorithm which prevents the control valves from jamming. The revised algorithm causes the control valves to move back and forth slightly while the vehicle is idling.
