Question

My cat - domestic shorthair female approximately 16 years of age, in good health, eats very little. She acts hungary but when I feed her, she eats very little or nothing. I have tried aeveral different flavors of canned cat food, dry cat food, kitten food, canned tuna, canned chicken and even some small pieces of steak. Do you have any suggestions?

Hello, usually when there is a problem with eating in cats or dogs and they act hungry but are not able to eat you should have the mouth looked at for any sores, broken teeth, infected gums, ulcers, or abscesses. Usually when they are not able to get food down or do not even want to attempt to eat anything it is related to a sore mouth. She may have some bad teeth that are abscessed and needing to be pulled. She could have infected gums due to gingivitis that is making the whole mouth sore to the touch. She may also have ulcers in her mouth or throat that are making it sore and difficult to swallow. I would suggest having a vet do a good oral exam of the mouth to try and determine if she has any of the above mentioned conditions. A lot of times a course of antibiotics and a dental may solve the problem and your baby could go on to eating. Also switching the food multiple times is not a good idea as this will throw off the balance of good bacteria in the gut which aids in digestion. When the bacteria in the gut gets off balance cats will not want to eat since their stomach is upset and uneasy. So try and stick to one food and possibly add a little plain yogurt (with active live cultures in it) to the food so she can get her gut back on track. I hope this helps some but if you need anything else please be sure to let me know.
