Question

I have a maple tree in my parkway and the trunk of it seems to be splitting away. It almost looks like a car has hit it (it's not growing back) or like it has a disease. Should I get it wrapped up with some sort of tree wrap? Or should I possibly replace it. The outgrowth is perfectly fine, it hasn't affected the trees growth.

Reply to Edward's Post: 1) The tree is about 7 years old, with a 34" caliper.
2) It is located in the parkway, gets direct sun all day.
3) It is splitting about 1' above ground level, on the trunk of the tree. The split is on half of the trunk side.
4) Again, the split is almost half the tree, it has never been hit or anything, it's almost like the bark has been shredding away from it.
5) The split has been noticable since we moved in 4 years ago, but seems to be getting bigger.

However, the tree is growing just fine, it has not affected it's growth.

Answer

Bark splitting can be caused by many different things Some examples are herbicide damage, freezing temperatures, growth cracks, fungus, diseases or lightning injury. If the damage is only on the south side of the tree it is most likely sun damage.White latex paint applied to the tree trunk will keep this from happening. Do not use anything to cover the area where the bark is gone. It will only be a place for insects to hide. Trim away any loose bark and the tree will heal itself. More information can be found here.
