Question

My 10 year old dacshund has a large patch on her back, (size of a 50 cent piece), that is tender to touch and looks like a scab under the hair. Now her hair is coming out in little pieces from that patch and the skin under it looks smooth but it's still painful to touch. The hair that comes out has the "scabby" or scaley stuff on the root end still attached. It doesn't seem to itch, but she doesn't like for us to touch it. She reacts as if it is painful for us to touch the spot. What is this?

Hi,

There are several possibilities, from your description; she could have ringworm, which looks red, irritated and scaly on the skin and causes the hair to break off at the base, or she may have received a wound that has become infected. She also may have an abscess that needs to be cleaned and drained by the vet.

For the moment, try to clean it by dabbing gently with diluted hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball, and apply a thin film of Neosporin (NOT with pain plus). If she allows you, without too much discomfort, try to apply warm compresses to draw out infection.

It would be best to have her evaluated by the vet, so a definite diagnosis can be made, and then she'll be given the best treatment to help this area heal. She'll also most likely be started on oral antibitoics, to prevent infection or resolve an infection, if this area is found to be infected at this time.

I hope she's feeling better very soon!
