Question
I just had a ct scan with dye for lymph swelling above collar bone. the results read " there is a crop of somewhat coalescent lymph nodes here of at least three or four varying sizes...largest about 12mm. Otherwise, negative findings with clear lung apices. There are changes of chronic degenerative disc disease at C3-C4-C5. the palpable abnormality in the left supraclavicular area is charaterized by a group of lymph nodes, none of which is particularly large or diagnostically pathologic". Also...could my chronic neck degenerative dic disease have a connection with the swollen lymph nodes??? What about a real bad sore throat...real ache type of sore throat(same side as my swelling now is) I had last winter that also affected my hearing (left ear), until it cleared up..about 3 days. Could this illness have made those nodes swell and then not completely shrink back to normal size? Is this possible? Again as far as Hodgkins I don't have any soaking night sweats. All Blood work normal.

Hello graves, the ct scan findings of a group of
coalescent (clumped together)
lymph nodes in the the neck above the collar bone with a maximum diameter of 12 mm may indicate an infective pathology. The most common cause is tuberculosis caysed by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Other causes are Non-mycobacterial infections, respiratory tract infections including ear infections caused by bacteria and viruses like adenovirus. However, in case of adults, malignancy is an important cause of enlarged lymph nodes in the neck (Cervical lymphadenopathy) and can be due to carcinoma of various organs like GIT (gastrointestinal tract), larynx, pharynx etc.
The chronic disc lesion in your case is probably not related to the enlarged glands and may have resulted from an age-related degenerative disease of the cervical spine.
I suggest that, as Ct scan is not a diagnostic tool for determining the cause of the enlarged glands, you may opt for FNAC(fine needle aspiration cytology) after consulting your physician. This is usally more dignostic than a Ct scan report.
