Depending upon the type of pesticide that you are talking about, some can affect people and animals quickly. For instance there are people with breathing problems that the chemicals in the pesticide can cause breathing problems to increase, same with some animals.

Ingesting some pesticides in vegetables that are not properly cleaned can make people and animals sick.
