Answer

If the student earned less then $3,100 in 2004 and you provided more than 50% of their support, you may claim them as a dependent.

I am assuming the student in question is a close relative to you, is a U.S. citizen or residident of North America and he/she does not file a joint return with anybody (i.e. they are not married).

The $3,100 test is the key. When the student turned 24 during the year (regardless of whether they were a full-time student) the income test must be met.
