Official press releases from the Vatican say that he died of a heart attack, 33 days after his election. No autopsy was performed.

There are many conspiracy theorists and several books that claim that he was murdered, by poison. The movie "Godfather III" had a similar plot element, involving a coverup of a banking fraud.

The real answer may never be known and the heart attack explanation may never be widely acepted.
