Question

I have been attempting to get rid of fleas in my home, and off of my 2, 1year old male cats. I have used flea sprays on the cats, and have bombed my house two times 2 weeks apart. I have also sprayed the house interior with Topol, and given the cats baths with diluted Dawn dish soap. I have washed everything that they have come in contact with, and am still finding fleas on the cats. How long do I need to keep this up?

Hi,

Your best defense against fleas would be to treat your cats with a flea treatment gotten from your vet (or ordered online, if the price is better), like Advantage, Frontline, or Revolution. These products are most effective on eliminating fleas and any other flea remedies from the pet store, supermarket or online, are not effective, and can have serious adverse health effects on your cats.

Bathing them with Dawn dishwashing liquid was a great idea on your part! The Dawn will kill live fleas, but eggs will remain, and hatch, and that's why you're still seeing a problem.

Washing all their bedding, etc., and throwing out anything that can't be washed is best, but having your home treated by a professional exterminator who specializes in fleas, is the most effective. A company like Fleabusters (www.fleabusters.com) is very good; I've used them in the past and they eliminated the problem.

If your cats are treated with the recommended product, AND your home/yard is treated by a professional, you should see the flea problem diminish and then be gone, within a couple of months. Yes, even though there will no longer be any adult fleas able to live on your cats, the problem does take a few weeks to a few months to resolve, completely. This has been my personal experience.

I hope you're able to get this accomplished, ASAP, and the problem will finally be eliminated.

Cher
