Info Request

Did she have blood work performed?

How much protein was in her urine?

Was a urine protein/creatinine ratio performed?

Was she ever put on antibiotics?

Is she symptomatic of kidney disease? Increased thirst, increased urination, decreased appetite, vomiting?

Thank you

Theresa

Dear Theresa, Yes blood work was done.
Do not know/remember exact amount-ratio.Itwas not high.Urinalysis was preformed 2 times 1 in July 1 in September. Protein in urine both times. She was put on Antibiotics in July. She has some increased thirst, some increased urination but not overly so.
Appetite is fine no vomiting. She is negative for heart worm and on Heartgard. Blood work was good.Slight elevation but on high side -protein in urine.Creatinine slightly elevated. Will check again in 1month(October) .July she had dental and tooth extraction(given Antibiotics). In April of this year she lost her companion of 8years(another Yorkie).Which was awful. :(
Has separation anxiety from family so never really left alone have tried it twice. Bad idea :.)
Bp was elevated at vets office. And once when we left her at home alone. She is my baby. I love her dearly I want to do what is good for her! Hope this was helpful! Anything else let me know. Thank you so very very much!!! Best Regards, XXXXX

Accepted Answer

Yes, in this case benazapril is safe to use in your dog. Monitoring bloodwork, especially the kidney values is important with this drug. She did have some kidney elevations so it must be used with caution. This drug actually has been used to lower blood pressure as well as it is currently being used in conjunction with other treatments for early renal disease. It has a substantial benefit as a treatment for renal failure so I would not be afraid to use it. It has been shown actually to slow the progression of kidney disease in many patients.

Blood work should be checked every 3-6 months.
