Question

Wire Terrier tore a toenail - is there an aneasthetic I can use to clip the sore nail? It is hanging off. How about antiseptic after it's off.   I am on a small income and cannot spend a lot of money.

Is the paw with the torn nail still bleeding? This will allow me to be of better help to you, thank you.

It did bleed enough that I had to clean footsteps marks off the kitchen floor several times but bleeding ended two days ago.    He is active as normal but favors the one rear paw which he keeps up off the ground when he can.

If the nail is split it may not heal right and it is dangerous to clip it off depending on how far down into the nail it has broken. I would recommend giving him a dose of aspirin at a dosage rate of one adult aspirin for every 32 pounds or one baby aspirin for every 16 pounds twice daily at 12 hour intervals and this will help with the pain. You should also keep it lightly wrapped so he does not catch it on anything and injure it worse and also apply some antibiotic ointment to it before wrapping it. If the nail is far enough away from the nail bed you can gently clip it off but if it has broken low into the nail bed honestly it would be best to try and contact your local animal shelter as they have contact numbers for the low cost veterinarians in your area that could safely clip the nail off where it needs to be so it will grow back correctly and not to low as to cause injury or bleeding again.

Thanks, Cheryl. That is very helpful. Is there any topical anaesthetic I could use to clip his nail/nails? Or a safe tranquilizer I could use to clip nails in future? This dog is so skittish it's really hard to get him to settle down.

You have been very helpful, and I will give you good feedback. Susan

Answer

You are so very welcome and the safest thing I could recommend is some natural calming suppliments that you can find at most all pet stores and this would allow for him to be less skittish and also if that is not possible you can give him a dose of Benadryl at a rate of 1-2 mg per pound of body weight every 12 hours and that will calm him some to allow you to do this carefully just make very sure you only clip a little and not near the nail bed that could cause bleeding to start again.
