Answer

A very logical question.

One can only speculate.

The rules of cricket (an older game than baseball) are somewhat like a baseball game, except with two home plates. A cricket "bowler" - i.e., pitcher - only "throws" to one of the home plates. Instead of bags there are "wickets." There are fielders. "Outs" are recorded similar to baseball outs.

One team "bats" until there are nine outs. Then the other team bats until they have more "runs" (and they win) or they get nine "outs" (and they lose).

It appears to me that the nine innings of a baseball game parallel the nine "outs" in cricket.
