Question

we have a Kenmore series 90 dryer. It's about 4-5 years old. When we press the start button, it "hums", as if it is going to start, but won't...even when the dryer is cold and hasn't been used for a few days. We don't want to buy a new one. My husband is pretty handy and I think, with some good guidance, could fix it. Please help!

We checked to ensure that all the wiring was secure. The dryer failed to start last night and my husband moved the drum inside a few inches and hit the button again and it started. It only buzzes while pressing the button, then nothing happens.

The circuit breaker is fine and is not getting "tripped".

What else would be helpful for you to know.

Also, we are wondering if it will even be worth it to try and fix, if we need to hire someone.

Thank you!

Accepted Answer

Diagnosing appliance problems can often be difficult. We rely on information provided to us by the customers. There are several things that could cause this problem, but when you said the your husband moved the drum and it started was some very good information. Either the switch on the door is defective or the motor is causing the problem. My bet would be the motor. The buzz is actually the motor buzzing. Replacement of the motor is a DYI project if you have mechanical skills. The motor retails for about $119 and a appliance repair shop will normally charge at least that much for labor. If it were mine I would fix it, but that is something you will have to decide.
