Question

My 3year old Pom began to lose hair November 2006. The vet ran thyroid test and put her on Thyroxin, retested 3 months later and kept her on the same dosage of Thyroxin. She developes small sores and they turn black but not all over her body, just in places. I am so worried for her. Can you help? I need help!

Is your girl spayed?

Is it her skin that turns black?

Do you happen to have a picture of your girl you can post here? If so, simply click the little tree icon, next to the You Tube icon in the tool bar and it will walk you through posting a picture. :)

Yes Ebony is spayed. Her skin doesn't turn black. The sore is blackened. She has 1 large ( See photo) and 2 smaller ones. She is taking 10ml 2x a day. Thyroxin .1mg 2x daily. Vitamins Efa-cap Her vitamins increased to one daily as to the one every other day previously prescribed.
She was first diagnoised last November but continues the black sore episodes. Hair is very thin and was very full. We do not know where to turn to next.
If you have any suggestions we would appreciate hearing from you again.

Answer

I am wondering if she may have the start of alopecia x. This is something you can discuss with your vet. You can read more below:

Alopecia X

The little black sores could be pyoderma.

Take a look at the websites and discuss these possibilities with your vet. :)

I read this site, thank you.
Vet called this am and he had taken some slight scrapings and hair and is running a culture.
He said it seems to be turning red, whatever that means. But said it will take a few more days to reach frution. He has spoken of us taking her to a dermatologist. We will do all we can to help this little darlin but we are both retired and on low fixed incomes. Hopeing she can be helped without all thee xtra expense that would entail. As I previously said Ebony first saw this vet last November right after her 3rd birthday, since then this has recured 2 more times.
I am praying she will get well as she is my core of life!

I am glad that the vet is doing the skin scraping. You can read about these here:

Please let me know how you make out with little Ebony. She and you will be in my thoughts. :)
