Question

My Chrysler T&C 1997 model Mini Van started leaking Power Steering fluid from the Pressure Hose. I replaced it and it worked fine for about 30 miles. The steering became stiff with no power assist. I replaced the power steering motor. (On the old motor the motor shaft had come right out of the motor. It appears the impeller came off the shaft.)Replacing the motor helped with the the power assist somewhat, but nothing like it was originally. I tried to apply vacuum to the unit assuming there might be a air lock, but that didn't help my problem. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Jim

I have done all that. Do you think the rack and pinion could have gone bad. I sure hope not. When i am driving down the road and shift the car down into a lower gear which requirs the engine to rev up and race, there is a high whirriiiing sound from the pump, but the power steering unit is full of fluid.

Hello

How much assist do you have???

Check fluid and look for any metalic residue??? draw some out (with turkey baster) and place on black surface to look at

I have normal assist when traveling straight ahead, and slight left or right. However, when I attempt to turn a corner or sharp right or left it is as if I don't have any assist atall. In order to turn a corner I find I get more assist if I shift down to low gear and rev the engine up while turning. I checked the Power Steering fluid for metallic residue and found it to be crystal clear and free from any metallic material. I purchased the pump at AutoZone and got the most expensive one they had. The box it came in has a sticker on it designating "Original Equipment ReManufactured" part # 20-8752

Answer

Hello

The proper way to diagnose would be with a pressure guage but with the old pump loosing its impellor, that damage probably contaminated system causing an internal eak inside steering gear. You also need to flush all the old fluid out as to not contaminate new gear. If you need removal instruction let me know

If this has helped hit ACCEPT.....BONUSES AND POSITIVE FEEDBACK WELCOMED

I really appreciate your effort with helping me with this problem. I am going to check the Pump Pressure. Where do I purchase or rent a Pressure test Kit as refered to the 6815 in particular. I phoned AutoZone and they are not familiar with it.

Accepted Answer

You may try a tool rental store. The one in the article is a chrysler tool. You need a hydraulic pressure gage that must read up to 2000 psi. you may have to make up the adapters to fit pump. Ask autozone if they have a hydraulic gage also ask for some one who is familar with car repair and explain you needs....some of those people are wal-mart rejects sssshhhhhFoot in mouth
