With a multimeter, what is the process for finding a short in the thermostat wiring?

A 4 conductor wire from thermostat to furnace and 2 wire to the condensing unit, the 3 amp fuse keeps tripping and I need to find the short.

Ok, here is what you need to do. First you will have to disconnect all the thermostat wires in the air handler and the compressor. Just be sure to mark each wire before disconnecting them in order to put them back in the correct way. now, the next step is to put one lead of the multi meter on one wire, and then proceed to touch the other lead of the multimeter to all the other wires, re-peat this process until you have gone through all the wires in the cable. Then if you come across any wire that beep on the multimeter when testing them, they will be the wires shorting against eachother. Just be sure to use the continuity tester setting on your multimeter. Hope this helps. Have a great night.
