Question
My husband has had a perianal abscess since May 25, 2007. Since that date, he has been hospitalized four separate times and has had two drainages and two surgeries. We are FINALLY beginning to think that the post surgical wound is healing properly and the abscess is not returning (we hope), but in the mean time every time he uses the bathroom (#2), he is experiencing immobilizing pain that lasts for 9-10 hours. The pain he feels is not in the abscess or surrounding adipose tissue of the buttocks, but rather a burning feeling in his rectum and anus. The surgeon he has been seeing (at a reputable hospital) has said this is due to several nerve endings in that area and that eventually it will go away. I feel there is something that is being misdiagnosed or that his explanation is not good enough. Any information you could supply would be greatly appreciated.
