Question

My 2 yr old lab/boxer acquired a cough over the last 2 days. very unusual. seems like when he tries to bark or gets excited in any way he exhibits a very dry gagging cough. Don't know if it's somehow related but he also has a smell to him which he never had either. I plan on taking him th the vet tomorrow but would like to have an idea of what is possibly wrong with him???

Hello, the coughing that your baby is having sounds like Kennel cough which can sound like your baby is gagging or trying to clear his throat. Your vet will be able to place him on some antibiotics and possibly a cough suppresant to help control and clear up the cough. It may take a week or so before the cough is gone but the antibiotics will help it out alot.

The smell that you are smelling is it comming form his rear, his body, or his mouth?

Does his skin have any scaly or red areas to it?

Has his diet changed at all?

Reply to Bully Breeder's Post: The best I can tell is the smell is from his head area around his collar? We were camping with him over the weekend and there were other dogs there. His diet at home is strictly "Back to Basics" brand but I'm sure it was compromised over the weekend with perhaps a few people sneeking him treats. He was in and out of a lake swimming as well. It's possible that the wet/dry cycles on his collar over 2 days (nylon web) is just dirty now and stinking like an old pair of socks.

Answer

Hello, it is possible that the collar has held in some oisture to the skin and is letting some bacteria build up underneath it. It is also possible that the bacteria could be causing a hot spot sort of thing under the collar as well. I would take the collar off and wash it in some bleach if at all possible then I would scrub tha area around the neck to make sure that nothing is trapped in the skin or the fur that could spread the infection and irritation. This should help with the odor and prevent a hot spot from occuring. Please be sure to let me know if you need anything else.
