That is an anti-theft code that manufacturers designed into the system so a thief cannot use a stolen radio without the code.

If you purchased the car new that information, or the code, should be in your owner's manual packet or original paperwork somewhere. It is usally a 4-6 digit code. Occassionally the dealers apply a sticker with the code on it to the backside of an ashtray or console cup holder or inside a console lid, possibly inside the glove box, on a door jamb, on a cd changer, generally someplace inconspicuous, but the locations can vary.

Also if you contact the selling dealer with proof of onwnership & the vin number they can give you the code as it should be in their records. Some people I know have had to go through warranty departments on a national level with say BMW North America, but a vin # & proof of purchase or ownership entitles you to this information.
