Question

I found the hard lump and have tried to catch the grub by putting salve on the spot and waiting for it to come out to breathe but haven't been successful. What else can I do?

Hi Ellen,

I think you are seeing cuterebra. This is a fly larva that can be picked up when a dog investigates a rabbit den or rodent den or even in straw. You will want to have the wound examined by your vet because incomplete removal can have serious side effects. You can read about this here:
http://www.petplace.com/dogs/cuterebra-infestation-in-dogs/page1.aspx

Since the side effects of not removing the whole worm are serious, I do recommend you have your vet do this. Now the following site does discuss non invasive methods of removing the larva though you have to read most of the article to get to this portion.

I hope this information is helpful to you.
