Question

I have a 9yr old Female Basset Hound. The past few days my boyfriend and I were away for the weekend. 1 day prior to us leaving, I noticed that she was acting strangely. I figured that this would pass as she seen us packing for our trip, so we figured she was upset by this. A family member stayed to take care of our 4 dogs while we were gone. We returned last night, and found the same behavior, pacing around the house, panting. Her normal bed is our couch and prior to us leaving - she wouldnt jump up on the couch. When we returned yesterday, she appeared to be fine, and she jumped up on the couch. Then the behavior returned a couple hours later. Today, she will not jump on the couch, and still paces the floor. No appetite or drinking changes, and no recent changes to our household. None of which have happend in the last few days. Doesnt seem to be in pain anywhere on her body. The other 3 dogs are acting normal. Do you think this is a behavioral problem or could this be medical related?

Hi Kelly,

I do not think this is behavioral. Bassets are known to have disc and vertebral neck and spinal issues.

She may have a buging disc or vertbrae:

Anal sacs are a lesser possibility

At nine she may also be a bit arthritic and just stiffened from lying still or jumping on the sofa.

Panting is a synptom of pain, nausea or stress.

There is also a disturbance to the equilibrium called vestibular syndrome that can come from an ear infection or abscessed tooth.

She may have been dehydrated or hypoglycemic as is common with small dogs.

If it continues,it is advisable to take an xray of the neck and spine to see if her discs are inflamed. She can receive medication for this disorder. The sweling may come and go and the symptoms as well. So that could account for the variations in her behavior.

Please let me know how your baby is doing. If you wish to discuss any of the links, I will always be here for you.

I hope she feels better very soon.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri
