Question

We have 2 miniature australian shepard puppies, 8 months old, 12 pounds.
They have each been throwing up their food for a week and a half.
They eat 1/2 Science Diet Puppy and 1/2 Avoderm. They have had this food for a couple of months. They throw up once or twice a day. It looks like oatmeal. The vet said to give them cottage cheese instead. One of them has already thrown that up as well. They are as energetic as ever and their poop looks fine.
This all started after their puppy training class at Petsmart last week. We gave them new training treats during class, Nature's Recipe Training Treats. They ate most of the 3.5 oz. jar during class.

Hi XXXXXXXXXX,

Have they had any diarrhea or looser bowel movements?

How soon after class did the vomiting start happening?

Reply to Jane Lefler's Post: Their poop and activity is very normal. They are very high energy and rustle and tumble all day long.
The one who had more of the treats and has the more sensitive system started throwing up about 30 minutes after the training treats. We did not notice the other one throwing up for a couple of days. We stopped giving them the training treats the next day, a week ago Wednesday.
They have continued to throw up once daily for just over a week now.
The throw up is not violent and does not contain blood. It looks like a medium dark oatmeal. The cottage cheese that the one just threw up looks just like cottage cheese. You would not know that it had been digested.

Hi XXXXXXXXXX,

I know that it started when you fed them the treats, but I really don't think the two are connected since one dog didn't have a problem for several days after the treats were given. I would try a few different things. You can give your dog some pepcid or Zantac. Read about Pepcid dosages and usage information here: http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/famotidine-pepcid/page1.aspx

Zantac can be given to a dog at .25 to 1mg per pound every 8-12 hours. Read about usage here:
http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/ranitidine-hcl-zantac/page1.aspx

I'd start feeding your dog smaller meals 4 times a day taking up the food bowl afterwards. This way your dog will have food in its belly on a regular basis throughout the day. This will cut down on excess bile. I'd also add a spoonful of plain yogurt to your dog’s food 2-3 times a week to add good bacteria to your dog’s stomach to aid in digestion as well. The bland diet of boiled chicken and rice can be used for a few days. If your dog does fine, you can slowly reintroduce your dog’s regular food into the chicken and rice mixture until it is all regular food.

If these things do not work for your dog, then your dog will need to go to the vet and have tests run to determine if a more serious condition is present.

Hope these suggestions help.
