Question

This is my 2nd contact today. Recap-2 females,2 yrs old were in country condo from nyc studio apt. the dominant one hissed like crazy and the other was submissive. now after 24 hours in nyc studio, the dominant one just hissed at nearby submissive cat. This is beginning to concern me or I may just be overreacting due to inexperience with these type of situations.

The problem is that I go to the country again this Friday where they will stay for 7 days. There are wild cats outside (mine are indoors). My brother will be watching the cats for me and he has a dog. Will the dog's scent on my brother - stress them in addition to everything else?

Is it better to give them a long hallway, small kitchen and bedroom to run with thus avoiding too much conflict or.....bedroom with 1/2 bathroom? Is it better for me to spend a few days with them in the country ocndo before I leave to help them adjust? OR Leave Them in The City where they are most comfortable and pay for a cat sitter?ellensara39300.8340373495

Reply

1. brother watching the two female sisters age 2 in the country condo.

2. I thought they needed a small space to adjust so I had a master bedroom with a small bathroom inside the bedroom for liter box.

3. They have been together since birth and it is only recently when I started taking them out for nail clipping as I can't that the dominant one started hissing.

Happy

4. I will be a hotel resort.

5. Other option is to leave them in nyc and get a cat sitter

Dear Ellen,

Cats HATE to go anywhere. As you know they are very territorial. There home is their sanctuary where they feel safe. Taking them back and forth is very stressful and upsetting to them

All hissing means is I'm scared!!! It is similar to a lions roar - designed to make the cat fearsome in the enemies eyes and get him to back down.I would not worry about it too much.

Here is the problem, your girls were stressed - then they smelled new scents - heard strange sounds and they did not see you - their mom - their anchor. Although cats do not follow a pack leader like dogs - they do depend on their human mom if they are in a different place or afraid.

My best advise to you is to leave your girls in their home. They do not need a 24/7 cat sitter. Just someone to come in once or twice a day and feed, water and check on them. They will sleep the rest of the time.

If they are in the country - stressed - smelling a dog - hearing outside cats - they are liable to stop eating and they you will come back to two sick kitties. They will be fine at home with a sitter for six days. That is what I would do if they were my babies.

Please let me knw if you wish to discuss this further. I will always be here for you.

Have a great trip and don't worry.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri
