Question

I have an 11 yr old fixed female that has started to lose all her hair, has had all blood analized with no diabetes or cancer detected. It is not mange and the vet is dumbfounded as to her ailment. She was famished when fed but now has difficulty eating. She is on a thyrozine and dermcaps but it has not been effective. What could possibly be wrong with her?

Answer

There are several stages of hair 'life'. She sounds like she is stuck in the non-growing stage. As to why, it may be for a long list of reasons.

I am sending you a link that addresses a probably complete list of reasons
. It is from a standard veterinary textbook of dermatology...your vet probably has, or had one in school.

To briefly summarize, it may be low thyroid, a stress or shock of some sort...surgery for example, or a high fever. Disease of the hair follicles, and the list goes on.

Fortunately, the list is in a chart form, and there are pictures. Pattern of baldness is often indicative of the problem.

I hope this gives you some help.
