Question

One of my cats has recently developed a drastic change in bowel movements her behind is very sore looking, (and is evidently very sore since she is always trying to clean it). What can I do to help get rid of this? Could this be from eating something bad, a furball, what could have caused it, and I did put some antibiotic ointment on her will she be okay eating this?

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that your cat is having this issue. A change in bowel movements can be caused by a variety of elements. Parasites, infection, blockage or food intolerance are the some of the main issues that cause diarrhea. I would suggest making a vet appointment and having a fecal run (explain the symptoms to them when you call, they may want you to bring in a sample).

Keeping her hydrated, as you have been doing, is of utmost importance. I would discontinue with the antibiotic cream and instead switch to giving her a "Sitz bath". This consists of taking a warm, damp washcloth and using it to gently compress the area. It offers some relief from the swelling and discomfort. A diet of boiled chicken and rice will also help her digestion out a bit. I hope she's feeling better soon. If you have any questions, let me know. -Robyn

Is there a time limitation on when I should be notifying the Vet? Meaning if this last longer than 2 days I would contact the vet but if it should stop sooner should I still contact them?

Answer

Hi,

If it's been going on for more the 24 hours, I would suggest contacting the vet. Dehydration wrecks havoc on the body and the sooner this can get under control the better it is for the cat. Additionally, diarrhea is more of a symptom then an illness. It's always important to determine what the cause of it is. If you give your vet a call, they may allow you to bring in a fecal (w/o brining in your cat) to rule out worms. These usually run between $8 and $15. The following is a link that explains why a vet visit may be in order http://www.petservice.com/ask_the_vet/article_archive/when_take_cat_vet.html Let me know if you have any other questions and I hope she's doing better soon. -Robyn
