Hi

Being that you have been taking Xanax for about a year, the best way to stop it would be by gradually decreasing the dose.
You should not stop taking xanax suddenly. Being that you have been taking it for a year now your system has become dependent on it, and suddenly stoping it would result in withdrawal symptoms which may be, feeling anxious, irritable, and not being able to sleep.
My suggestion would be to discuss decreasing the dose instead of not taking any at all, with your psychiatrist.
You may consider taking 0.5 mg (half a tablet) twice a day and than eventually decreasing it to 0.5mg daily, and than completely stoping it.
With Xanax is always best to gradually decrease the dose versus stoping it at once.

Best wishes....

I hope this helps. If you have any further questions don’t hesitate to ask.
