Question

I think i got some cleaning fluid for my floors in my cat's eye. I flushed it with water, but the lid is still red and he is keeping it closed. What can i do?

Hi,

You already did the right thing by flushing it with water. If the cleaning fluid was caustic, it might have caused a chemical burn. The best thing you could do for him right now, is bring him to an ER vet center for evaluation and treatment.

You will be told if there are burns or abrasions on the surface of the cornea and the most appropriate medication will be prescribed to help his eye heal and feel more comfortable.

If you have no ER vet in your area, look in your Yellow Pages under Veterinarians for any listings including 'emergency phone/emergency hours', and call until you either find someone to come into the office for your or to make a housecall.

If you place a cool, damp teabag on the closed eye, it might provide some temporary relief, but he really needs to see a vet, now.

I hope he'll be fine, and please let me know how he's doing. Thanks,

Cher
