Question

Dog rubbing eye. Irritated, bloodshot, white discharge coming out of corner. Suspect possible bug spray that was sprayed around corners of floors in apartment by roommate. Did not actually see her contact any. Been doing this since last night.

Hello, XXXXXX

You need to flush out the with plain saline. Only use saline. Do not ever put any human eye drops like Visine in it. Do this twice a day. This will wash out any debris or bug spray.

I would make an appointment with your vet if it's not better in 24 hours. It could have caused an infection or inflammation that needs prescription meds to treat. You can also use an antibiotic eye ointment called Terramycin.

Let me know if you need more help.

This is my student daughter's dog. I gave her the same advise, but I wanted it from a vet. How can she make her own saline? What's the proper dilution? She hasn't hooked up with a Milwaukee vet yet and doesn't have much disposable income, so she's a do-it-yourselfer. Thanks.      Sue

Well you can't make it yourself, and it be right. You can get it very cheap at any drug store or Walmart. Just go to the isle where contact lens care products are kept. You will see bottles that just say saline. It very cheap at only a few dollars a 12 oz bottle.
