Question

No other way to say this, my dog's butt smells, I have been been dealing with the anal glands as a friend showed me (she works for at a vet hospital. This has been going on for several weeks and it is not going away. Do you have any idea what would cause this problem. Sometimes there is like a greasy secretion that is around the anal area, I just keep wiping it. When he sits done, he is leaving marks all over the carpet.

Answer

Hello XXXXXXXXX,

This sounds like the Anal glands are impacted or abscessed. This is a situation that may be controlled with a higher fiber diet making it easier for your dog to eliminate stool without squeezing the glands so hard. The other option is a surical procedure that may cause nerve damage and the dog may not be able to control the bowel movements. I would go into the Vet. and discuss your options with him about cleaning the glands and a special diet to help with the excretions from the glands.

Wendy,

Depending on your Vet. and what needs to be done, he may make a small incision and clean out the glands, or he may just drain them and give an antibiotic injection and some oral antibitics to follow up. In any case the Vet. will be able to guide you in the right direction as far as the glands and what is needed. Joan Jav917

Hello Wendy,

You are wlecome for the information. This is a common problem with some species of dogs. I would definately try to add some more fiber to the diet and see the Vet. for assistance. Joan Jav917
