Question

An aunt passed 4 years ago(predeeded by her husband) with no children, living siblings, or a will. She has a host of nieces and nephews, I am one of them. She owned heir property in Johnston Co, North Carolina from her father (as do the nieces and nephews from their parents, her sibs). Her plot was in 2 years tax arrears and filed with a law firm to be auctioned. I paid the past due tax and an additional year. It is again time to pay taxes.
My question is "Can I obtain the property rights/deed to own the property? If not, what can i do and where do i start?

no house on land - no one lived there in many decades Aunt lived in Washington, DC as did I
no will
no executor
no children / no husband/ no living siblings
No probate/ no action taken on estate / no claims or proceedings filed other than being assigned to an attourney to initiate auction for NC tax arrears, which i paid back taxes and fees for

Accepted Answer

As the property is in North Carolina - NC intestate Succession law should apply. - http://www.finance.cch.com/pops/c50s10d190_NC.asp

The property should be probated in the local probate court. Please let me know if any clarification needed.

Answer

Paying the tax will not give you any advantage. You only may demand other owners to compensate their share of amount you paid.
