Question

We have a 4 year old Great Dane named Joey. He was asking for the door this afternoon and unfortunately did not make it to his usual "spot" in the yard to do his business, and urinated on the patio. A clot of blood was visible, I automatically thought of a urinary track infection but he does not seem too uncomfortable and is drinking and eating kind of as usual, and is still as excited to get a treat (milkbone). This evening my husband noticed some sort of a mass directly on his genitals (under the foreskin). We think that might be the source of the blood and not his bladder. Any ideas? I can provide a picture of what it looks like.

Answer

Hello XXXXXXXX,

It sounds like there has been some kind of trauma to his prepucial area. There was bleeding under the prepuce which has now formed a hematoma (blood blister under the skin). When he goes to urinate the penis passes there the prepuce and the hematoma. Blood and clots then get on his penis and fall to the ground while he urinates.

I would recommend putting an ice pack on the area for 20 minutes every few hours.

Check his gums and skin for red spots and other signs of bruising to make sure he does not have a blood clotting disorder. If you see any other signs of bruising, take him to the E.R. right away.

If there is any chance he got into rat bait, take him to the E.R. right away as that would cause abnormal bleeding.

Keep him quiet the rest of the night and tomorrow too.

Reply to Dr. Gabby's Post: We wonder if this might not be a blood blister... for it is neither red or purple. but in fact more white and hard... Could we send you a picture?
