Question

My 9 year old neutered rottweiller has just recently started having one of his bottom eyelids droop. it looks like the skin has stretched out. the skin is pinkish. He seems to not be able to see things as well, balls, etc., and even barked ferociously at my 13 year old son when they were on opposite sides of the wrought iron gate, as though he didnt recognize my son. any ideas of what is going on with him?

Hello,

This problem you are describing is called Ectropion, aka a drooping eyelid. It is common in the Rottweiler and larger breed dogs. You need to get your Guy to a Veterinary Opthalmologist asap. If not treated the problem can result in blindness.

Answer

Hello,

This is something that seems to come with age on the larger species dogs. I imagine like dysplacia, it is something that comes with breeding. I have a rescue Rottie that we had gotten last week and I noticed she is OCD and very possessive of the family. This is typical of rotties. I would try to get your guy into a Veterinary Opthamologist, because the condition is treatable. I hope this information has helped. Joan Jav917
