Hi Betta. You will not be able to tell until they have at least started to mature. Usually anywhere from 4-6 months of age. The most obvious hint will be the color of the cere. That is the fleshy, bulbous looking area just above the beak where the nostrils are located. In young birds, it is the same color; usually tan, light brown, creamy color or similar. It will stay the same color on a mature female. As the male matures, his cere will become a shade of blue, sometimes into the purples. Since it sounds like this may be your first experience with birds, I'm going to give you a lot of links to information about proper and safe Budgie care. Pay extra close attention to the diet, the consequences of poor diet, and the safety issues. (bird proofing your home). If you got your birds from a pet store, it's not likely you were given any helpful guidance for their care and feeding. They want you to think all you have to do is give them some seeds everyday when in fact that could not be further from the truth. They are going to need fruits, veggies, leafy greens and much more. I hope this helps you out and I hope the information at the links will help you to have happy, healthy little birds for a long time to come. If you need anything else, just let me know. Patricia
