Reply to xarqi's Post: Dangerous-The effects alcohol can or does have on individuals who consume it IE: mood altering (can turn passive behavior into violent behavior) Causing people to do things they normally wouldn't do IE: sexual behaviors. Causing loss of physical coordination and perceptions (driving, loss of balance etc). The probability of addiction to it or the life style. Weight gain, liver damage, hangovers. I'm sure there are several other dangers that I have not mentioned but you get the idea.

Drug is the term used to describe "All other illegal substances"

From your definition of dangerous, you seem to be referring to
individual harm, rather than harm to others or to society, is that
correct?

As for the drug definition, I'm more confused now since alcohol
is not an illegal substance in most cultures. As it stands, I'd
have to answer that plutonium is probably a far more dangerous
drug (= illegal substance) than alcohol, but I'm sure that is not
what you are getting at.

I'll take a guess at what I think you mean and post a provisional
answer, but it may not be quite on target without more
clarification.

Answer

Alcohol is not considered the most dangerous drug simply
because it isn't.

As one example, one molecule of ricin can kill one cell. It is far
more toxic than alcohol.

As another example, tobacco-related deaths in the U.S.
outnumber those related to alcohol by about 3 to 1.

Reply to xarqi's Post: The definition of "dangerous" absolutly includes a danger to society. Most of the effects it has on the "user" Becomes a danger to everyone. The loss of coordination- The high percentage of motorists killed by drunk drivers, operating machinery at the work place with others involved etc. Turning violent- (That speeks for itself). Addiction- (Way too many reasons to list). Affects even those who aren't in contact with the user-Tax paid treatments, jail space, The family members of victims who've been killed or injured caused by the effects of alcohol.

This list could go on for days......

I guess as far as the drug definition i'm asking why alcohol is alway's talked about, considered or treated separately from any other drug whether they are "legal" or not. An example of alcohols seperation from the rest could be; A treatment group such as AA a group that treats stricly alcoholics while NA(narcotics anonymous) treats all other drug addicts. But alcohol is a drug legal or not it has much of the same properties as the illegal drugs and in most cases the negative impact is much greater.

Answer

Greetings:

Alcohol is not depicted on the toxicity chart since it is not taken in milligrams like drugs.

Compare Legal Drugs with Illegal Drugs

Alcohol was illegal - Alcohol Prohibition Was A Failure

There was a time when even in America selling alcohol was a crime but selling marijuana was still legal. It was called alcohol prohibition and it was really an attempt to stop Irish, German, Italian and Polish workers from drinking beer and Southern Blacks from drinking whisky. When alcohol was made illegal in the USA in 1919 through a constitutional ammendment, that legal act was supposed to eradicate alcoholism and violence. Instead, the new law led to rapid growth of organised crime, widespread corruption of the police forces and general disrespect for all laws. Al Capone became the most notorious criminal in America, so famously rich that it was easier to jail him for tax evasion than for his crime empire. Alcohol prohibition was a total failure. However, it was enacted because in a Protestant-dominated America, alcohol was associated with recent immigrants from Ireland, Germany, Italy and Spain, most of whom were Catholics.
Marijuana

Many people who sniff "glue" "gasoline" "paint" and other material products - can cause harm --they can be considered dangerous to self and others, but, without being facetious, what should our government do - ban all things?.....And, you may even consider another's atittude/temper to be more dangerous (those that don't even subject self to illegal substances and/or alcohol)- especially those wishing for absolute control, power and greed.

Labeling alcohol as more dangerous than other drugs would not be accurate -One pill can lead to grave harm to self and others as opposed to one glass of alcohol (per statistics) - and it depends on the person's frame of mind, of course.  However, outside of the use of drugs, believe it or not, sugar is more dangerous.Sugar can cause an increase in delat, alpha and theta brain waves, which can alter the mind's ability to think clearly. Sugar can cause depression - this is just a couple - see full list below:

Smoke Free

I do understand your point - and I agree - Personally, I have always been against AA - and yet it is held in the highest regard by so many - In my opinion, I find it to be merely hypocritcal and the program does not heal as it should (it is used as a social gathering facility) - that is why there are so many, thousands actually, of members who have been there for years and perhaps will remain for life  - AA started out as a great concept - but it developed like the child's game of "Telephone"...(One by one, each person repeats the whispered sentence as they hear it when it is whispered to them. When the last person receives the message, he/she repeats it out loud. It is usually completely different than the original statement).....thus, over the years, AA got sidetracked.....they preach "God" and Spirituality, but they do not live up to it.....this may be viewed as a strong statement, but I have professional knowledge being that I have healed many from this program..... I believe Alcoholism can be cured (as I have witnessed) one just needs to find the proper way to do it - I am working on improving this program.

However, I believe that mental illness is more dangerous and very sad which, in reality, is the culprit for alcohol and drug use by so many, and our government is not taking the proper measures to help, let alone properly notice. Unfortunately, there are many things that stand to be reformed. Only the ones who are willing to protest, let their voices be heard, can perhaps make a difference in our society.

Bright Blessings.

XXXXXXXXX:
Thanks for clarifying that. The answer I posted was a little off in
one part as it dealt with relative toxicity, and since you are
including societal effects too, this is less relevant. The final part
of my answer correctly addresses your intended meaning I
believe.

It's a lot faster than saying: "This is what I think but I could be
wrong." :-)
