Question
Over the past couple of months we have been having an intermittant problem with my car started stalling out while driving. I have replaced the fuel pump and fuel sender assembly, fuel filter, XBO relay, replaces spark plugs and wires, and put new gasket on manifold. No one can seem to pinpoint the problem. When the car is running it seems to run great for a few days or a couple of weeks, then it starts stalling out again. It just shuts down while I'm driving and won't restart. Sometimes the stalling happens within minutes of starting it up, other times it's after driving it for a while. We are completely stumped and getting increasingly frustrated, not to mention the expense with no resolution of the problem. No matter what we do no one seems to be able to locate what is causing the stalling. Please HELP !!!!!

98 Ford Escort LX, manual transmission. They also checked the O2 sensor and for vacumn leaks.

the 2 areas i would focus on would be the ignition control module & the crankshaft position sensor. Both these components can fail in this way. However the ignition module is located inside the car's computer & must be serviced as a unit & reprogrammed as well. Both compontents require a savy tech with a labscope to diagnose properly. If you would like to locate a good tech in your area....try looking at www.iatn.net

Answer
from what you describe that sounds like some relays that were replaced. the ignition module or PCM or ECM as some would call it on your vehicle probably was not replaced. The main reason being there not cheap & people dont want to guess on that part...thats where you need a talented tech who can scope this for you.

We took it to 3 different places, and they ran numerous diagnostics. Is a labscope not a normal tool that they would have at an auto repair shop?
Would a Ford Dealership have the proper equipment to properly diagnose this problem? Can you give me a ballpark figure on what this kind of repair runs?
