Answer

Hi, and thanks for giving me the opportunity to answer your question.

The USA has a rich history in encouraging immigration of highly skilled workers and highly educated scholars. The most obvious example was post WWII when Europeans were anxious to migrate, and the US was equally anxious to compete as world leader in the areas of technology, defense, and space travel.

As much as we'd like to believe that we're the quintessential educational country, the fact remains that there are scholars pursuing incredible research in every corner of the globe. We benefit from their migration to the US, because we need their diversity to bring fresh, new ideas to our own institutions. Microbiology is researched differently at the Sorbonne in Paris, in Kiev, at Oxford, and in Norway. We NEED those different perspectives to bring all that there is to bring to the table.

Diversity is the foundation of our political and economic structure. It is also vital to our educational research.

I hope that this has answered your question. Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do to help.

Good luck, and best regards,

Michael

Reply to Michael's Post: How does the U.S. benefit particularly from African skilled workers? How has the "brain drain" contributed to America's economy?

Accepted Answer

Well, regarding the country of origin of our immigrants, the same concepts apply.

There have been many African immigrants to contribute greatly to US culture, not the least of which is Miriam Makeba, an exceptional musical artist; and Philip Emeagwali, a renowned computer scientist and internet innovator.

These people brought with them MARKETABLE skills and expertise. They increased the economy of the US (and therefore decreased the economy of their native countries) when they migrated, because they offered salable products that were not previously available in the US. So, for example, in its simplest terms, if you were a consumer of web services, you would be inclined to pay for the services inspired by Philip Emeagwali, rather than export your dollars to find him in Africa. The dollars emigrate with the product!

I hope that this has answered your question. But if not, please continue the dialogue!

Best regards.

Michael
