Question

I have 2 parrots, a 10 year old African Grey and an 8 year old Orange Wing Amazon. They were both hand fed, and have not been around other birds. (I got both birds when they were between 3 and 6 months old) I have a friend who is convinced that bird poop is a bio-hazard just waiting to bring down the first human they encounter. And whether the birds are healthy or sick they post a greater than average risk to humans via contamination from the viruses and bacteria in their stools. I don't really have enough facts to counter her fears, although I don't think the birds are a greater than average risk as long as they are healthy. I think some birds can carry chlamydia, but if my birds have not been exposed to chlamydia, and have tested negative, are they likely to just develop chlamydia because they are birds? Don't they have to have some exposure to disease to get a disease?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Anita. It sounds like you have one of those friends that can be a real doomsayer about any type of pet they don't care for. (Cat's smother babies, dogs will always give you worms, etc.) You are absolutely right in your opinion. Yes, there are some diseases that birds can have, which can be transferred to humans. However, the bird would be sick enough the condition would not go unnoticed. I assume you have the well bird checkups once a year anyway and that would catch any problem, even if in it's early stages. So long as your birds are in good health, I can assure your friend, that other than maybe a slight "yuck" factor, healthy parrot poop is harmless. Heck, it won't even stain your clothes. Wink Your friend is confusing the dangers that can come from wild, unprotected birds. Tell him/her, that inside, the house, cage birds are not a danger. I hope this helps but if you need anything else, just let me know. Patricia
