Question

Hi,
My (indoor/outdoor pet) cat has recently stopped coming home (not even to eat his food), and when I went looking for him I found he was just a few houses down from where we live. When we called his name he just looked at my sister and I as if we were strangers. He did come home for a few hours but now he has not been seen for 4 days (and his food has not been eaten).
This is extremely out of his character and I am worried he may have lost his memory or a serious cat disease. We think he is about 11 yrs old (whe we got him he was not a kitten).
I miss my cat and am desperate for help to bring him back home.
Thanks in advance,
Diane

Info Request

Hi Diane...

I'll be glad to help you with this, but I'd like some more information first. Are the people down the street feeding him? Do you have other cats or dogs at your house who might have upset him? Is he neutered?

Cats don't forget where they live. There's another reason why he's not coming home.

Thanks...
Missy

Hi Missy,

Thanks a lot for your email, My responses to your questions: Are the people down the street feeding him? No i don't think so. Do you have other cats or dogs at your house who might have upset him? 2 beagle dogs one is 3yrs and the other one is 1 yr. Is he neutered? YES!

Could it be he is having trouble climbing the fence to get in to the backyard (he is getting old), The gate has to be closed at all time c/o the beagle dogs (but this is ot new), and we try to keep an eye out for him so we can open it for him.

My sister was wondering if he could possibly have alheimers or senile?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cordially,

Diane

Answer

Hi Diane...

How old is he? I don't think senility enters into this, but he could be having trouble getting over the fence. Could you leave the gate open when the dogs are inside? Or, could you cut a cat-size hole in the fence or gate?

I'd leave some food out for him, even if it has to be outside the fence. He needs to eat! Talk to the neighbors and ask them to please not feed him because you want him to come home. Also, just in case he is confused, put something that smells like home -- his bed or some clothing you've worn or bedding you've slept on -- outside the fence. Cats recognize familiar places by scent. But, since he goes beyond your yard, several fences or decks may smell like him.

Next time you go to look for him, take some treats or something he likes to eat with you.
When you spot him, sit on the ground and call to him very quietly. Pat the ground in front of you or wiggle your fingers to try to get his attention. Show him the treats or make sure he hears you opening the bag. If he's really determined to not come to you, you could borrow a trap from a local rescue and try to trap him. But that seems awfully drastic for someone who's been your friend for a long time. If he's friendly, you could also ask the neighbor to walk him home or invite him inside until you can retrieve him. Take a cat carrier with you, and put him in the carrier!

Do you think he might be upset by the dogs? Can you create a dog-free zone for him in the house? Is there a way for him to go in and out without having a very young beagle running along beside him. Maybe he could start using the front door instead of the yard.

I hope this helps and your boy comes in soon. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do. And I'd love to know when he comes home, too.

Missy
