Question

I want to indentify a bird that I saw in Dallas Texas walking near a creek. It had a brown body but the distinguishing thing was a big plum of feathers coming out of the birds crown.

Is this something like what you saw? It's a Quail.

If this isn't your bird, give me more details about what you saw - were the legs longer? Body different?

Reply to TheCaretaker's Post: The legs were longer, the body more elongated and the plume at the top of the head was alot longer with some fluffy white feathers at the base. Thank you for your help. The bird seemed to just walk around the edge of the small lake watching ducks and swans.

Thanks for your hard work-I checked the pictures and it is not one of those birds. The feathers on the head are at least 2/3 the length of the body. Jeanne

Answer

OK, let's try this one (the darker body you saw may have been indicative of a young, not fully mature bird)

I am sorry but the plumes are more centered on the crown of the head and there is that long feather coming out of the plumes. If this question cannot be answered I can just mark accept-let me know. Thanks

Info Request

Can you approximate the size of the body? Like a football, softball, smaller or larger?

How about the length of the legs in proportion to the bird? Like stilts or like a pigeon?

Any idea of whether or not the feet were webbed?

We haven't given up yet!

Okay- the bird had stilt like legs- a good 8 inches long, body elongated and a little round at the bottom like an eggplant- probably as long as a football. The legs were at least 2/3 the length of the birds body. I remember the feet were big but I do not know about the webbing. Thanks

Answer

It's difficult to find pictures that match exactly what you saw. We're thinking you saw a bird in full mating feather, which may be different from stock photos. Keeping that in mind, let's try these:

(Imagine this guy here with his top crest feathers fully extended)

This is a blue heron
