Question

This female is lethargic, seems to have trouble swallowing, has very little appetite, turns way from food, and has vomited what little she ate.
She is ambulatory, but walks slowly. She appeared mid day to be returning to normal, but seems to have relapsed.
Difficult to tell if her breathing is rapid, or if she is panting.

Info Request

How long has this been going on? Has there been any diet changes or any chance she could have gotten into anything toxic? And is she on heartworm prevention? This will allow me to be of better help to you Thank you.

First noticed symptoms little more than 24 hours ago. No diet changes other than brand of dry dogfood
Not currently on HW prevent.
Has gotten out of yard lately and could have gotten into toxic substance. Nothing toxic accesible in home.

Accepted Answer

What you ned to do is to try feeding a bland diet of cooked rice and/or boiled chicken or beef for the next 1-2 days in small bites to see if this will help with his lethargy and trouble swallowing. Monitor her closely as the fact she is having trouble breathing can mean that she is having respiratory issues which may or may not be due to a toxic reponse. The panting can be from something toxic ingestes, pain, or even heartwork or cardiac issues so if this continues you need to have her seen first thing in the morning. Allow her intestional tract to recover before trying the bland diet then feed small bites and amounts along with small sips of water to see if this is tolerable but any worsening do have her seen right away or first thing in the morning if it continues to rule out other underlying causes that could relate to her heart or even esophagus.

Reply to Cheryl K.'s Post: Unfortunatly whatever it was, she succumbed to. I left her and the others about three hours ago. She was under my bed, but was alive.
I found her still there.
In hindsight, she needed to go to an emergency vet, but they charge more than I can afford.
Her name was Bandida, she was a stray that came to live here, and she will be missed terribly.
Thank you anyway.

Answer

I am so sorry to hear about Bandida and with all that you wrote I feel this was a cardiac issue such as heartworm or even congestive heart failure. I do feel that even if you could have afforded it there may have not been anything you could have done differently and I am just so very sorry and I know that you will miss her terribly and this type of issue never gets easier for me and most likely never will. I feel she crossed the rainbow bridge with happy thought knowing that you gave her a wonderful life that she may have never known had you not taken her in and I do hope you can find comfort with that. I am going to add a link below that I feel will offer you some additional comfort so when you feel up to it please click the below link and read the story. And I am so very sorry that you are having to go through this.
