Reply to Terri Riba's Post: kitten is 6 weeks old

he is one of 4 in litter

none of the others have any problems

he isn't nursing or eating. I'm feding him KMR and he did have a good bowel movment and urination is not a problem

he is separating himself from others

at first vet visit (4 weeks old) he was smaller than others but not as much as now. his liter mates are twice a big as him.

is he dehydrated?

if you pull up the skin at his scruff, does it spring back?

are any of the kittens eating food yet?

Thanks,

Terri

Yes, he is dehydrated dispite the every 2 hours of KMR. Maybe I'm not giving him enough - I stop when he refuses - last time he took 22 cc.

all the other kittens are eating whole food (Science Diet kitten and mom's hairball prevention)

Accepted Answer

Dear friend,

The first things I worry about with young kittens is hypoglcemia and dehydration. This baby may have a congenital abnormality that is causing this or he may have been the weakest and the stronger ones pushd him out of the way so he could not nurse.

Get a bottle of plain pedialyte and baby food with no onion or garlic. First put a drop of pancake syrup on his tongue to raise his blood sugar. The give him droppers of pedialyte - about one half cc every fifteen minutes for a half hour. Next water down the baby food or a/d canned cat food (only at vets) and give him the same amount - do this every three hours until he perks up. Then every 6 hours until he begins eating,

Please let me know how things are going. I will always be happy to help further.

Very sincerely,

Terri
