furnance noise

My Ruud heating system (heat pump) makes a noise
just before it stops blowing air, at times this is a loud noise which can be heard on the first floor,
the furnance is in the basement, is this just ducts
expanding and contracting, or is this something else, does not effect heating, does not happen in summer when ac is working.
