Question

My cat has excessive salivation...to the point that there is a puddle under him. He had been outside. Could this be a sign of some sort of poisoning. Other that the salivation he seems fine.

Is this a recent occurance or has he always done this...and how long has he been doing it if its recent. How old is he? Neutered?

Reply to ZooCVT's Post: Chance is about two years old. We found him last year with a damaged leg that took us six months to get it healed. He has had all of his vaccincations and is neutered. He does has a malformed jaw from a old fracture so one of his bottom teeth does stick out. Last night he was sneezing and this morning is when he started drooling.

Answer

I would be concerned with a tooth issue being he has mouth problems already. Many times when its a fang problem, this will cause nasal irritation and drooling so a vet visit is a good idea to rule that out.

Reply to ZooCVT's Post: I really don't think it is a tooth problem at this time. Especially since it started so fast. I was concerned that maybe he had been poisoned or something. I will take him to his vet tommorrow.

Answer

Tooth issues can come up suddenly...whether it be that he got the tooth hooked up on something or possibly something caught in his mouth or gums or it just abscessed and now its bugging him.. The drooling and sneezing without any other signs of distress make me think it may not be a toxin but keep a close eye on him anyway and should he start looking depressed or  showing signs of respiratory distress or vomiting then a vet vet is needed sooner.

Answer

Hi There,
You don't mention your cat's vaccination history, but a super upper respiratory infection will present this way, even in a vaccinated cat. In the cat vaccination "FVRCP", the 'C' stands for calici virus, which can manifest itself as sneezing, excessive drooling and progress to oral ulcerations. I would get your cat to the vet as soon as possible to begin antibiotic and fluid therapy, if necessary. It may take two weeks to run its course.
Good Luck,
Dr. Katie
