Question

We just found what we think is an absess the size of a golf ball under our female cats skin. She has not been in contact with any other cats. I read usually absesses are caused by fight with other cats. Could this be serious? Her behavior and appetite are normal.

Answer

An abscess is an area of infection so yes this would be significant if that is what this is.
A nick in the skin letting in bacteria can often happen in a fight but other injuries can lead to abscesses also.
I would have the vet check this lump out.
It might be an abscess or it could be a tumor and it could be a cyst etc.
You can read about lumps and bumps here
http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/lumps.html
and see a table of reasons for them here
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=1&cat=1338&articleid=204
If it is something that needs to be removed better to do it while its as small as possible. If its an infection starting treatment soon is also a good idea.
Hope this helps you!
