Question

I have been keeping reptiles for over 50 years but I have never run into this before. I have a 20ft female tiger Retic . She is 8 years old. She retains the fur from the rabbits she eats to the point where she becomes impacted. She passes calcium and urine just fine. Is there anything I can give her to help. I would appreciate any help you can give me. My 20ft tiger retic female retaines the fur from the rabbits she eats in her intestinal system to the point where becomes swollen . She rarely passes fur . What can I do to help regulate her.

Thanks
Kent

Info Request

Hello Kent:

How long has this been going on?

What else to you offer her?

Does this happen with any other food item offered?

What kind of water is offered? pool? etc?

How much activity does she get?

Thanks,

Jill

It has been going on pretty much for the last 8 years every since she was little.
I have fed her nothing but rabbits since she was big enough to take rabbits.
I was thinking of giving her pigs because there isn't hardly any hair but was concerned about worms the pigs may be carring.
The water she gets is natural from my well. She drinks about 2 gallons a week.
She dosn't get enough excersise. She is in a 8ft x 4ft encloser.
Do pythons respond to types of laxitives given to humans?

Thanks

The thing she needs most is exercise. I would definitely change the food item. I would try to get her into a pool of water somehow and swim. If not, then at least maybe get her somewhere like a big backyard where she can get exercise. She needs this at least once weekly if possible. You can give her the mineral oil supplementation which you already are. It would be better to do things naturally via exercise and changing the food item. I would not use human laxatives. Reptiles are so sensitive to things and they cannot metabolize it well. I would also recommend frozen food since frozen prey items will not harbor any parasites. Pigs are fine. I also recommend feeding smaller prey but more of them. This will be easier for her to digest. You will have to trigger the strike response by dangleing the prey food in front of her using a long pole, etc.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if i can help you further. Good luck.

Thanks,

Jill
