Question
98 jeep cherokee classic. rhythmic squeeking from front passenger side wheel well. squeeking stops when breaks applied. consequently, we changed the break pads and resurfaced the rotors. same symptoms arose after a few weeks. so, we replaced the rotors and changed the break pads. same symptoms arose again. took to shop... they said we need to change the rotors... again. what is causing this? could it be the bearings?
note:the front passenger rotor was indeed warped when we changed it... why does it keep warping?

Hi there! The problem you are having indicates either a brake caliper hanging up or a brake hose. You need to look at the rotor you are taking off and see if it is discolored. It most likely will look blue. What is happening is the caliper is staying on and causing drag. After it drags for a while it overheats the pads and the rotor causing the warpage. It continues to drag after every stop, until it wears off enough pad to no longer drag.I would start with a different caliper and if that does not resolve it go with the brake hose.Sometimes the hose will go bad internally and create a one way valve not allowing the pressure to release after you take your foot of the brake.Hope this helps! Thanks

Reply to carguy1's Post: Thank you Carguy. But I have a little more detail that I forgot to mention... the last time I changed the rotors, I brought a caliper for the passenger side with me, just being thorough. But the guy I was working with (not a mechanic)convinced me that it wasn't worth replacing, because the passenger side caliper seemed to allow the same amount of movement as the drivers side (with the rotors and pads removed). He convinced me that this meant that the caliper was fine. Does this rule out the caliper? You were right about the blue color. There is also a bad smell after a long drive. Does that just mean it should be the brake hoses?

You definatly have one or the other hanging up.If the mechanic is convinced you have no problem with the caliper,go with the hose.It doesen't have to apply alot of pressure just enough. If it was a problem with the master cylinder then it would not just be the r/f wheel. If you have alot of miles on the jeep it is possibly still the caliper. However I didn't inspect it,someone you trust did. That is not a bad thing,I am just saying it is one or the other.I worked for a brake service chain for 12 years and have seen alot of strange stuff.I hope this answers you question. If not please feel free to reply. Thanks
