Why do cats roll in the dirt?

Pet cat goes outdoors, finds apatch of dirt or cement walkway and rolls around in a state of apparent euphoria.

Rolling in the dirt is basically a way of cooling off, or in many instances, it helps 'scratch an itch' also. Intact cats will roll around (especially females) to spread phermones to attract a mate.
