Question

I have a 1999 Chrysler Town & Country Limited - There seems to be an intermittent electronical problem which effects the displays on the dashboard and starting the car. if the odometer screen and other dashboard display screens blank I cannot start the car. I have had the starter replaced but that did not resolve the problem.

Answer

A failing BCM (Body Control Module) will cause this fault on your model. Countless hours can be spent tracing down this fault especially when intermittent so if this were in my shop I would replace the BCM as a short cut to testing. The BCM will shut down the cluster and then cause a no start.

Can you please clarify how the BCM relates to this problem. Is there any historical data relating to the BCM playing a role in shutting down the car, blanking the dashboard, display screens and starting the car that I can review? I'm not exactly sure where the BCM is located on my vehicle. When you use the word "cluster" what are you referring? I'm not an auto mechanic and plain english would help clarify your answer. Do you know what the approximate cost for the module may be?

Accepted Answer

The BCM just like the ECM (engine control module) and TCM (transmission control module) all communicate with each other including the cluster which is the dashboard you refer to as going blank.
When you turn the key to run or start this powers up the various modules and its the BCM (on your model) that is in charge of powering up the dash.
There is historical data, however it is by paid membership and can be found here.

You cannot replace it yourself because it it comes blank and must be programmed with proprietary software in order for it to function. This requires specialized equipment and a subscription to the data.
